GETTING TO SEAFARER’S VIEW

The Isle of Wight has several travel links with Mainland UK (referred to as The Mainland by locals). The main routes are from Southampton to Cowes via Red Funnel, but there are also routes from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Ryde.

It is important to note that Cowes is made up of 2 halves, East Cowes and West Cowes, and these towns are separated by a beautiful stretch of water called the river Medina and although a Chain Ferry between East and West (for both passengers and vehicles) is located adjacent to the East Cowes ferry terminal, it is shockingly unreliable, so a 30 minute drive from East Cowes to West Cowes via Newport is recommended and any suggestions below will reflect that.

FROM SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton is a very convenient gateway to the Isle of Wight as it has an International Airport, excellent rail links and a free shuttle bus that takes you directly to Town Quay and the Red Funnel Terminals. (For rail and coach travellers) The FREE Quayconnect Shuttle Bus connects Southampton’s Central Rail Station (short walk from the coach station) to Red Funnel’s ferry ports.

BY FOOT

The Red Jet, run by Red Funnel is perfect for foot passengers. It runs regularly from Town Quay in Southampton to West Cowes and the trip only takes 25 minutes. Turn right on to West Cowes High street and follow the pedestrianised street for a 5 minute walk to the door of Seafarer’s View.

BY CAR

Red Funnel also run a vehicle ferry service from Southampton which runs regularly. Crossings take 60 minutes from Southampton to East Cowes and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Food and drink is available onboard and the solent views from the deck are spectacular, you can even see Seafarer’s View as you enter Cowes harbour. Once you disembark at East Cowes, the drive to West Cowes is a 30 minute trip that will give you a glimpse of what the island has to offer, just follow the signs to Newport. It is the capital of the Island and has a host of main stream shops and supermarkets. From Newport, it’s a straight route through to West Cowes, but remember to stop when you reach the sea.

FROM PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth with it’s rail station at the harbour provides convenient travel links to Fishbourne and Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

BY FOOT

The FastCat, run by Wightlink offers foot passengers a 22 minute crossing over to Ryde Pier where there is a rail link between the pier head and the Bus station run by Southern Vectis. The number 9 bus takes you to Newport Bus station where you can take a connecting bus (number 1) to Cowes Carvel Lane, M&S. Seafarer’s View is just a 6 minute walk from the M&S store. The Bus trip alone takes an hour and our recommendation for foot passengers would be to travel via Southampton.

BY CAR

Wightlink also run a vehicle ferry service from Portsmouth which sails regularly over to Fishbourne. Crossings take 45 minutes and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Food and drink is available onboard and the solent views from the deck are spectacular. Once you disembark at Fishbourne the drive to West Cowes is a 40 minute trip that will give you a glimpse of what the island has to offer, just follow the signs to Newport. It is the capital of the Island and has a host of main stream shops and supermarkets. From Newport, it’s a straight route through to West Cowes, but remember to stop when you reach the sea.

FROM LYMINGTON

Lymington has a rail station at the harbour and the ferry terminal there provides a scenic vehicle and foot passenger ferry across the solent to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

BY FOOT & CAR

Wightlink run the ferry service from Lymington which sails regularly over to the beautiful harbour town of Yarmouth. Crossings take 40 minutes and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Food and drink is available onboard and the views during the crossing are stunning. Yarmouth has it’s own Southern Vectis Bus station at the harbour and buses run reasonably frequently to Newport via the number 7, and a connecting bus from Newport to Cowes (Number 1), it’s then just a few minute’s walk from Cowes Bus Station to Seafarer’s View.

The bus trip alone can take over an hour and our recommendation for foot passengers would be to travel via the quicker Southampton – West Cowes route. You can travel on the same ferry crossing by car and the drive from Yarmouth harbour to Seafarer’s View in Cowes takes approximately 30 minutes.
